    Chiropractic Care for Expectant Mothers

    March 19, 2022

Having children is one of the greatest gifts and joys in life. However, carrying those children for 9 months can sometimes really be a pain. Literally!

Pregnant women deal with a variety of aches and pains leading up to their delivery date. They often must contend with back pain, hip pain, pelvic pain, and headaches. While some women simply grin and bear the pain, assuming it’s just a part of being pregnant, other women have turned toward chiropractic care to find relief.

    What’s Chiropractic Care?

The American Pregnancy Organization defines chiropractic care as, “… a process that helps maintain the “spinal column, discs, and related nerves” in perfect health. The practice also focuses on maintaining bone geometry.”

Using various techniques, a chiropractor is able to perform adjustments to put misaligned joints back where they belong, thereby relieving associated pain and discomfort. But beyond relieving the common aches and pains of pregnancy, there are some other wonderful benefits chiropractic offers pregnant women:

    Helps with Labor

Chiropractic has been shown to help reduce labor and delivery time. Evidence has shown women who have received chiropractic care during their pregnancy may experience shorter labor times. Furthermore, chiropractic care has been shown to potentially reduce the time spent in labor by as much as 2 hours! So, whether it’s your first child or third child, chiropractic can help you spend less time in labor and delivery.

Reduces the Chances of a C-Section

Attending regular chiropractic appointments during pregnancy can dramatically lower your chances of cesarean delivery. One of the most common reasons for C-sections is because the baby cannot align its own body into an optimal delivery position because of intrauterine constraints. Using various techniques, chiropractors can make adjustments to assure that your baby is in the optimal position, readying him or her for birth.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe During Pregnancy?

Yes. The American Pregnancy Organization says chiropractic care is very safe. And, you will find that some chiropractors specialize in areas such as prenatal and postnatal care. So if you are interested in receiving chiropractic during your pregnancy, you can always look for a specialist in your area.

And speaking of being in the area, if you are nearby and would like to explore treatment options, please give our office a call or stop in to schedule a free consultation.

High Heels & Your Posture: The Battle is Real

    March 15, 2021

High-heeled shoes have been around for a very long time. Depictions of these shoes can be seen on ancient Egyptian murals dating back 3500 years. From the Roman era all the way through the Middle Ages, wherein 1533 the first women’s heeled shoes were designed specifically to lengthen her legs, and up until the present day, high heel shoes have been a part of society and fashion.

But that doesn’t make them a good fashion choice. In fact, wearing high heel shoes on a regular basis can be very bad for your health. While they may make your body look a certain way, the trade-offs in terms of injury and posture problems are hardly worth it.

Here’s What Happens to Your Muscles…

You’ve probably heard the term muscle memory before. Our muscles have a way of permanently taking on the posture they have assumed for a long period of time. When you wear high heels every day, your foot and ankle are forced into an unnatural plantarflexed position for an extended period of time. Over time, this causes key muscles in your legs to become shorter and tighter, while other muscles become longer and weaker. And, because your body works as one, functional unit, these muscular imbalances affect your entire body posture.

Common problems associated with high heel wearing include low back problems, knee issues, and hunch back posture. In turn, these issues increase your risk of further injuries, making you more prone to ankle and knee sprains. And women are more prone to developing knee osteoarthritis, which is when the joints become worn out, and it is believed this is due in large part to women wearing high heels.

    Chiropractic Care for Posture Correction

If you think you may already be suffering from posture issues due to high heels, it’s not something you should ignore. Damage from chronic posture problems can compound over time.

Thankfully, poor posture can be corrected with chiropractic care. A chiropractor can help restore your spine and bring misaligned muscles and tendons back into place. They can also show you exercise you can do at home to help you strengthen your back, hips, and joints to reinforce your correction.

If you’d like to get speak to someone and get a free consultation, call or stop by our offices today.

Ergonomic Tips for Continuing to Work from Home After Coronavirus

    August 4, 2020

Many of us have found ourselves working from home because of the coronavirus. And while the country has slowly begun to open back up, threats of a “second wave” have emerged, which means a majority of us could be working from home for the foreseeable future.

Working from home may be helping us all save on gas expenses, but it sure is putting a crimp in many backs and necks! That’s because many people working from home did not have a dedicated home office to begin with. And so we find ourselves working in less than ideal ergonomic situations as we work on sofas, bookshelves and on top of our beds.

With this in mind, here are some ergonomic tips to help your body feel more comfortable working from home:

    Use a Separate Monitor

Looking down all day at your laptop screen can really hurt your neck. You ideally want to be looking straight ahead. If you have a desktop home computer, use this instead of your laptop as it will help you look straight ahead while working. If you don’t, consider getting a monitor that you can attach to your laptop so you can keep your head elevated.

    External Keyboards and Mouse

If another larger monitor is not within your budget, consider getting an external wireless keyboard and mouse. This will allow you to use your laptop as a monitor and raise it using a laptop riser or stack of books while you type and control the screen separately.

    Invest in a Better Chair

You ideally want a chair that offers cushioning and is height adjustable. Keep in mind you get what you pay for. While not everyone can afford a $1600 Aeron chair, suitable ones can be purchased for $200 – $300. Also, keep in mind that work-related chairs and desks are tax-deductible.

    Move Your Body

Your body shouldn’t be seated all day long. It’s important to get up every half hour and move around. Do some stretching and take some nice deep breaths. If you get easily caught up in your work, then use an app reminder such as UP or Stand Up.

    Visit a Chiropractor

If, after following these guidelines, your body still feels sore, it may be time to visit your local chiropractor. They will be able to tailor a program to deal with your specific physical issues.

If you are in the area and would like to work with a chiropractor to get your body feeling better, give us a call or stop by our office. We can tailor a treatment plan for your specific needs.
